Pentatonix's "Can't Sleep Love" - Single Review

Hailing from the great state of Texas, a cappella group Pentatonix have accomplished quite a bit in a small amount of time. From winning the third season of The Sing-Off in 2011, claiming a $200,000 grand prize and a recording contract with Sony Music in the process, the five-piece act quickly went on to release four Top 10 efforts, had a cameo in Pitch Perfect 2 and earned a GRAMMY for their Daft Punk mash up in 2015. Not too shabby.

While supporting American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson on her acclaimed Piece By Piece Tour (they need to hurry up and release a reworked version of "Heartbeat Song"), the group shared what was to be the first single off their upcoming self-titled album of original material. "Can't Sleep Love" is a sweet, poppy message of an undeniable connection. As the group proves they certainly know how to arrange music without the use of instrumentals, and shed more light on their impressive vocal abilities, the quintet also showcase their solid songwriting skills on the new single.

"Can't Sleep Love" is a slick, radio-tailored effort that highlights the individual talents of each Pentatonix member. From Mitch's impressive tenor to Avi's vocal bass and Kevin's beatboxing skills, each of the artists are able to shine on their own, while still coming together to create a cohesive, smooth and enjoyable bop that should have no problem garnering attention for their upcoming album.

Scott, Kirstie and Mitch tackle the lyrical portion of the new release, with commendable chemistry and appropriate emotional conviction and vocal restraint. "Somebody wake up my heart, light me up, set fire to my soul, cause' I can't do it anymore," the trio sings on the track's infectious hook before the upbeat chorus rolls around. The single is a unique take on the pop genre, focusing attention on organic, necessary elements instead of just loud, chaotic production.

After hearing the song live in Austin, Texas, it was clear that "Can't Sleep Love" would be a surefire hit for Pentatonix. Known for covers and mashups, the group have showed they can excel with original material as well. The accompanying, colorful music video stays true to the group's style as it does not take anything away from the song's impact. It's a promising next step for Pentatonix and their next album, out on October 16.
